The damask rose was brought to Kelaa M’gouna in 1938 by the French. The first rosewater distillery in the area establishes around this time. The inaugural Rose Festival was held soon after and has since become an annual event.

The Festival of Roses celebrates the first weekend of May each year. It lasts two days; it marks the arrival of these flowers in the Dades and M’goun valleys. During this moussem or Festival, Kalaat M’gouna doubles its population. The Festival is also an opportunity for visitors to Kelaa M’gouna to discover its small artisan and agricultural products from the region. More than 4,000 tons are produced during the Festival, which takes about a ton to extract one liter.

From April to June, when the Valley of Roses is in full bloom and filling the air with a lovely flower scent, is the best time to visit Kelaat M’Gouna. It’s also a nice time to go from September to November in the fall. The cooler weather makes exploring the Atlas Mountains and the nearby kasbahs easy. It can get really hot in the summer and cooler at night in the winter.
How to Get to Kelaat M’Gouna
You can drive to Kelaat M’Gouna from most of Morocco’s big towns. Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ), about 90 km away, is the closest airport. From there, tourists can take a cab or rent a car and drive through the Dades Valley. From Marrakech, 300 km away, you can take buses or shared cars to get to Tinghir and Boumalne Dades. These services stop in Kelaat M’Gouna. People from Fes or Merzouga can take a long-distance bus to Tinghir and then a car in the city. If you want to see the beautiful scenery along the way, renting a car is a great choice.
